The UNION critic

The Union critics have been extremely busy lately. “The Union isn’t doing anything…they all need to return to the floor…it’s a clique over there and my personal favorite….the Pension/Insurance Rep is working at the Convention Center and we should not be paying for that." It goes on and on. I am sure that each of us has heard all the complaints and accusations. The critics range from one-time very active members and supporters to folk that have really never been involved.

These have been some of the most difficult times in our local’s history. With the bad economy our employer, as well as other companies have capitalized on this crisis to take back years of hard fought gains. WE ARE ALL frustrated but have the critics offered any real solutions? Much of what we are hearing from them stems from misinformation ( in some cases outright lies) and unrealistic expectations about what the Union can reasonably accomplish. It is important that we all understand that the Union cannot perform miracles. We are only as strong as our weakest member. We are ALL the UNION, not just those elected to do the daily business of our local.

Daily those you have elected are working to protect the best interest of everyone. The Union bargains collectively for ALL workers. We must resist the temptation to listen to those that are motivated by SELF INTEREST, DEVISIVE feelings and mean- spirited propaganda. Resolving our struggles will take our collective strength and solidarity. We must plan, organize and work our way to a better place. I am confident that together we can stand the trials we now face. We also can choose to implode and allow the Company to benefit. The choice is ours.
