LIE: Beginning next year, employers will report health care benefits as income on
W-2 forms and workers will have to pay taxes on these benefits.
The Truth: Employeers are required to start reporting the dollar value of an
employee's health care benefits on W-2 forms in 2011 in anticipation of when a proposed excise tax may apply in 2018.
But no one will be taxed on their benefits. After 2018, health plans may be taxed on just the part of a participant's benefits that rise above a certain level.
